    • Apartment hunting in China: the condensed version

Should check walls and ceiling for damp as well. Could be leak problems.

Should also note safety. If it is on ground floor it is easy for thieves to jump through window.

Another common problem in Chengdu is construction. If you are next to a building site or moving into a bldg undergoing construction/renovation be prepared for noise.

Be extra wary of ownership. The landlord is legally obliged to own a certificate of ownership. If you do not check this you might fall victim to someone pretending to be an owner and then taking your rent money. This has happened to unwitting foreigners (and Chinese, of course) here before.

    • "Look at my Lamborghini": Man makes vulgar display of wealth

Vulgar because Sichuan has a high rate of poverty.. people living with nothing. A useless object like this car could buy them houses or a school.

Vulgar because, unlike muscles, not everybody has equal opportunity to attain it.

And finally, if a guy came without a top on and ripped like Dave Hasslehoff, that would also be a vulgar display.

Impressive. Can't think of another 2nd tier or below city in China that would have this sort of creative counter culture interest... and do it well. Good old Chengdu, keeping it unreal.

      @Mike

Sounds like UK dubstep to me. I'd also like to know who did it. Perhaps someone has that music recognition app on their iphone?

Btw, if you liked this, you might like one I have been enjoying a lot recently. Here's the link url: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cXDgFwE13g

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > What do you think about the recent anti-foreigner/anti-Japanese vibe?

Presuming you're not Japanese, I think you're being a little oversensitive.

Just Chinese sound and fury. They have their little internet sensations where they feel all indignant about something or other and then it blows over when the herd get bored or the gov clamps down. Soon enough there'll be some new 'scandal' and all the angry mob with their cries of indignation and lit sticks, will run off in another direction.

(Besides, there's enough smart and well-raised locals in Chengdu to step in and help if you were really in trouble.)

Let's all just hope that one day their will be some internet scandal about how little the Chinese as a country read books for pleasure and all the mob will run off to the library and start demanding all types of knowledge. That would make them much less prone to jingoism, violence and other such proclivities of the intellectually bereft.

Ye, Xinjiiang food is better in Shanghai than Chengdu I found. Which is weird given proximity.

Anyway, there are 2 in Lazy Pug restaurant complex. The one 1 from next door to Lazy Pug has Xinjiang beer, which is made with hops and is actually nice.

However, the one on the second floor, referred to above, has a friendly owner (Sky) who speaks English; it is co-ran by ethnic Xinjiangese; and has these lamb pasties which are really good. Downside is, every time I go there I hear rats scurrying around behind the walls.

Who wants to start a Xinjiang restaurant here with me? Cheap, with the pasties, with the Xinjiang beer, and clean. Alright, well i can't be bothered, but if YOU open it, i'll be your best customer!

    • Forums > Food & Drink > Eating free in Chengdu

I don't see a problem with this deal. In fact, I think it's quite good.

Firstly, no self respecting adult goes to a bar and has ONE drink. And even if you just have 2 cheap beers there, you still come away with an incredibly cheap home cooked western meal.

I ate there yesterday and had the Shepherd's pie which was made by a Western cook.. think the English boss, and was excellent. Highly recommended.

    • Chengdu > The Sultan Turkish & Middle Eastern Restaurant (Halal)
      苏坦土耳其餐吧

Ye, food is passable because it's not expensive.

The service is horrific here though. You're ignored. Staff are completely indifferent to you (even by Chinese standards).

The food arrives at strange intervals.. sometimes 30 minutes after you have finished all the other dishes.

Been there 3 times and same problem every time.

    • Chengdu > Le Sud
      南方法国餐厅

      In the land of the euro-cuisine blind, the one-eyed french owned restaurant is king... However;

      - Service far from regal
Owner surly and doesn't answer phone. Dishes arriving VERY late. Unwelcoming staff.

      - Food not fit for a king
Recommend the lamb, but the chicken dish was watery and lacking flavour. Pizza dishes quite good.

      - Decorated by someone lacking vision
Environment bland and completely lacking in atmosphere

      - Monstrous racism
Racist banana black man picture sits on display in corner

      I pledge no allegiance.
