    • The Glamorous Life: stumbling around in a sober stupor

Large nightclubs are pretty useless in any country, let alone Chengdu. They're just large, noisy, sweaty containers. Smaller bars in Chengdu occasionally have some great stuff and it appears that the younger generation (under 25) of locals are getting into slightly better music (not bland pop). For my part though I've always rated Seven Club since it has a dance floor and sometimes plays a kinda of Latin music and singalong Chinese anthems rather than the usual R & B monstrosities.

    • Forums > Living in Chengdu > 5 consecutive Z-visa Policy

I have been on 5 consecutive Z working visas with the same company. I wish to change my company now but have been told I must leave China for one year before I can obtain a new z-visa. I heard many variations on this particular rule. I've heard that one month leave is enough or six months too. Several times I have heard that the policy has changed.

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with this. And whether switching to a different visa for a while means I can come back on to a Z later on.

    • Forums > Food & Drink > I have 5 days in Chengdu. Where should I eat?

Yeah I went to that Yu's Family Restaurant place. Certainly inventive but I prefer the more robust fare to be found in small backstreet places. Call me a philistine but I find the expensive stuff here far too finicky. "Da rong he" on Zijing Bei lu in the south is pretty good for a more upmarket experience and it has lovely big picture menu if you can't speak Chinese. There is also a chongqing hotpot place on that road nearer the 2nd ring road that is pretty good. Day to day, just walk around outside the centre and from 11am-2pm and 6pm-9pm and eat at the most crowded place.

Erm... I think they some sort of Salsa dance night at Carols Too on Renmin nan lu on Wednesday. Walk north from the Shamrock to get to the bar.

    • Chengdu > Safari
      迪拜餐吧

4.5 Stars would be more accurate because at present they only offer a set meal, which is delicious and well priced, but a menu is needed once customers find out what they like. The ambiance is quite nice and could become a spot for a quiet drink with the outside area.

    • Chengdu > Tandoor Indian Cuisine
      坦道印度餐厅

Apparently the most authentic Indian restaurant in town. If authentic means tasteless and overpriced then this has authenticity in abundance.

We ate a set meal for two. This included the tandoori chicken, fish, chicken curry, pilau rice and a single small nan. Only one nan. A set meal for two with only one nan. That makes little sense to me.

The service is passable albeit functional. I don't really mind bad service so long as the food is delicious, but I noted that no glass of water or tea was offered upon arrival.

The entree consisted of a too sweet but potable soup and a plate of diced carrot, cucumber and turnip. The diced vegetables looked like they had been left out on the counter for a week and were covered in black specks of dirt and browning at the corners.

We instinctively ignored these starters in expectation of a lovely portion of chicken. When it arrived my heart fell. The portion was SO small, about a mouthful of chicken. It was chewy and tasted fairly bland. The single small fish I received was tasty but not enough to feed all but the very smallest of mammals.

The most embarrassing dish was the chicken curry. 'Mild' is one word to describe the taste, 'Shit' is far more accurate adjective. Again the chicken was uncommonly chewy. The tablespoon of rice pudding at the end was pleasant enough but couldn't salvage a disappointing meal.

We had bought a set meal off the internet for 100kuai at a discount from 400kuai. I felt that I had been ripped off even with the discount.

I simply cannot believe they charge 400kuai for a meal as poor as this. I have to assume they served us a cheap approximation of what the 400kuai actual buys. If this is the case then the proprietors are not only inept but also dishonest and idiotic. Surely a discount offer is designed to drum up business not drive it away?

And they only gave us one nan.
      Don't eat here.

    • Chengdu > Chen Mapo Tofu Restaurant
      陈麻婆豆腐

I think there might be a few Chen Mapo Doufu places knocking around but the one I went to is on Yulong West Street (西玉龙街). The service wasn't great. They didn't inform us that they had no aubergine left until well after we had finished all our other dishes and had hassled the waiting staff several times for aubergine dish we had ordered.

That aside the meal was very nice and at a very reasonable prices. The mapo doufu unsurprisingly was a highlight. Recommend.

    • Chengdu > Da Rong He
      大蓉和

I think its not THAT pricey at about 70RMB a head. The dishes are generally delicious especially the tea roast duck. The portions are large so avoid over ordering.

    • Chengdu > Carol's by the River
      卡罗临江西酒吧

This bar is actually OK and might be a good choice for older parenty types. Sometimes there are bands too that recklessly covering Coldplay etc... with gay abandon. Food is American dross found at most places and is good enough. Pool table. Suffers from the orangeness thing a little like Hooters. On the plus side there is plenty of seating.
