- Strong earthquake rocks Ya'an, Sichuan and felt in Chengdu [update]
  Thank you for this update. I was in Chengdu teaching last summer, and this breaks my heart. I've heard from some of my students, and their families are fine, but so many families are not. I saw the memorial to the Wenchuan quake, and it was so moving, and now this? I hope you all are safe.

  I used Ctrip - online - when I was in Chengdu last summer. It worked out great. Some of the people I was with used the travel desk at the Sim's Cozy Garden hostel, but whoever was working wasn't helpful the day I stopped in.

  Yes, Hong Qi. Also, the money you put on the card expires at the end of the month, so budget accordingly. You can refill the cards at any time, though.
  By the time I had the card figured out, it was time to leave Chengdu. Alas.

  I'm teaching this summer at Southwest Jiaotong University, and my accommodations, apparently, do not have Internet access. I'm tired of going to Starbucks! My network finder shows a "China Unicom", and it looks like there is a way to buy WLAN service. Yes? No? Does anyone have any suggestions or help?

  On a related note, is there a particularly good place to buy fabric, yarn, and other needlework supplies? Are any of the textile mills near Chengdu?
