    • Chengdu > Indian Food Corner

have some comments to make in addition to my previous review.

went there with a friend for lunch on friday and was 'served' by an ayi who i've run into there before. middle-aged, unable to read the vast majority of the menu (because of the lack of chinese translations) and incredibly unschooled in the basics of waiting tables. in the past she's forgotten parts of orders, made mistakes with orders, or has promised that the cook was coming '马上' when it was fairly evident they weren't. last friday, she eclipsed all of these offenses rather spectacularly. it more or less went like this:

us: hey, naan's on the menu! can you actually make it now?

her: oh, yeah, no problem. but most people like the chapati.

      us: we like naan.

her: but don't you want the chapati?

us: no, can we please have some naan?

      her: oh, nope, not today.

us: ok, an order of chapati it is. we'd also like samosas.

      her: you like those, huh?

      us: yes.

      her: we're all out today.

      us: ok...how about this curry?

her: oh, you can't eat that, it's spicy.

us: no, we really like spicy food. can we have that?

      her: really?! are you sure???

      us: yes!

her: ok...(muttering about how spicy it is...)

us: oh, there's an 'indian breakfast' section on the menu, interesting...

      her: you want breakfast?

us: well, what are these items?

her: (explains what they all are, etc. etc.)

us: can we have an order of the first breakfast item?

      her: nope, we're all out.

us: what about the other breakfast items?

her: nope, can't get any of those today.

us: ok...(gritting teeth)...can we have some pakoras?

      her: sure, no problem.

us: thank God...ok, chapatis, spicy curry, pakora, what else?

me: oh, look, they have gulab jamun, my favorite! can we have that?

      her: that's a dessert.

us: we know, we like it. we'll have an order of gulab jamun.

her: (looking at me and i feel a direct quote is necessary here) "你那么胖喜欢吃甜品?"

      us: excuse me?

her: "你那么胖喜欢吃甜品?" (translation: you're that fat and like to eat desserts?)

      us: oh, no, she didn't...!

      me: can we go??

      my friend: um. yes. (speechless...)

me: (to the ayi) forget it, we're leaving!

her: oh...ok...(baffled as to why we'd be leaving)

my friend: (to the ayi) that was so rude, my friend is really angry!

her: oh, really?? um..."不好意思." (basically, 'pardon' or 'excuse me'.)

      end of scene.

from the previous review: "The service staff is kind and attentive"??? are you kidding me? maybe if the only restaurants you'd ever been to we're in a prison camp!

I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK. EVER.

honestly, what were the owners thinking, openly advertising on gochengdoo.com, ostensibly with the intention of attracting foreign customers and having a waitress like this?!? i work hard for my money i will not pay two or three times a good bowl of noodles to be insulted. so yes, indian food corner is 'cheap' for indian food, but it's not the best indian food in town, the dining room still smells like a toilet, and the people 'working' there are utterly ignorant of how to run a business.

and, as a side note, the 兰州拉面/lanzhou la mian/muslim noodles a few doors down is great.
