BEST cakes, cookies (soft cookies, yum!), pies, and other sweet baked goods in town, hands down!

plus the restaurant has a decent menu of sandwiches, soups, salads, pizzas, coffees, and so on, all at very reasonable prices and quite good.

a nice place to while away a quiet

afternoon as it's never very busy.

also they have a kids' play area which is nice.

their made-to-order cakes can be made in practically any style, size or color to suit your taste, so great for parties.

my only complaint is i wish they managed to keep the floor a bit cleaner, especially when my two-year-old is running around in his socks.

that and the owner is a bit grumpy.

but the rest of the staff, both foreign and local are great, very friendly and helpful, especially with special orders.

    • Chengdu > SM Mall
      SM广场

kind of a ghetto mall, really, in a feelgood sort of way.

there's a wal-mart in the basement level--wal-mart if is the devil, i know, but not only do they have "rock-bottom prices" (8 kuai for a liter of 100% orange juice!), but they do have some nice items that are hard to find in chengdu, particularly in the housewares section.

i have two favorite things at this mall: 1) the variety of kid-friendly places.

there are playgrounds in both the kfc and mcdonald's, also a permanent bouncing castle on the basement level, rollerblading on the second floor, another playground in the laiya department store, at least two kids training centers for things like art, music, and judo (and a gymboree wannabe coming soon), and a number of kids' clothes and toys shops in the basement and on the third floor with a decent selection and good prices.

plus on the third floor you can bargain!

      2) the knitting shop on the second floor.

it has the widest selection of luxury yarns i've ever seen in chengdu, including loads of japanese imports.

the prices are still lower than back west and you get a 10% off VIP card for free upon your first purchase.

plus the staff are friendly and helpful.

      南方法国餐厅

Nice food, extremely reasonably priced, intimate atmosphere. The only drawback is that the menu is rather limited in its selection; but as it rotates every month or so, it's not too bad. Definitely a go-to place if you're looking for something other than Chinese food.

The supermarket itself is okay but at present there is not a place for shopping if you are not living around 'cause the metro construction blocks the way, bus can get right there, only taxies or walk....

      通道酒吧

Nice little cozy British place set between the alley of BABI II and 1855 . This place doesnt have the sleaze oozing out like regular places. The owners Bern & Gary were very nice people to talk to.

Will be returning soon for my weekend drink.

I went to the Underground Bar last night and I completely agree with the previous review. This is a great British bar and the owners are incredibly friendly. I am on holiday in Chengdu. This is my last week but I will be certainly returning to this bar before my departure. In fact, I am going again on Wednesday for St Patrick's night - the bonus being they are giving away a free Irish stew. I will wash it down with some cheap Guinness they also have on offer. A brilliant bar - the best, in my opinion, I have found in Chengdu.

Great place to take your smoking, drinking, gambling friends when you want a break from it all.

Excellent food although am not a big fan of real or fake meat. Plenty of non-fake meat options too.
There is some kind of rewards points system and if it is your bday, you may score a pressie.

It's a special occasion kind of place rather than a lifestyle.

      南方法国餐厅

Valentines day, also Chinese New Year, the place was packed and staffed by two. The chef served a set menu and the friendly atmosphere of the place encouraged customers to set and clear the table for one another. A 3 course meal was prepared and served to all of cabbage salad w bruschetta, Lamb chop & chicken leg w couscous, and a pastry for dessert. Friendly atmosphere, top food and fun times!

It is indeed a bit expensive at least RMB 35 without getting reallying stuffed. Portions are small. But I feel the menu changed, a lot of their "signature dishes" disappeared and I really dislike the meat imitations, which reminds me of the articialness of MacDonald's. Then again since it's a vegan restaurant and their veggie dishes don't convince me, they all taste blend, without direction without leaving a lasting impression. Two points for the ambience and interior, which is really nice, especially if you reserve a room.

I found this to be a very nice little bar. They have a relatively decent (for a Chengdu bar) beer menu, which I found to be particularly nice because of the discount you get if you buy a whole six pack. Also the owner of the bar is incredibly nice and greeted me nearly as soon as I sat down and had a drink. They had a nice jazz band playing to set the atmosphere and on the night I went were hosting a fundraiser for earthquake victims. Nice little bar hidden between some clubs.

    • Chengdu > Yangyang Canguan
      杨杨餐馆

The only real bummer about this place is that it's so popular it can be hard to get a table at lunchtime. But if you're patient you can just loiter for a while and sit down at a table as soon as the occupants leave. The waiters should then respect you as the new holders of the table, and serve you as such. Other than that, the food is great, and the staff are indeed pretty fast-paced people.

    • Chengdu > Parkway Thai Restaurant
      百世威泰国餐厅

Moderately priced!? Well, I guess everything is relative. The crab fried rice--no crab meat was in evidence. The soup was really small and not terrific. I also found the atmosphere a little pretentious. But these are minor complaints, nothing was too bad, and if you really want to eat Thai food then you might consider coming here. The papaya salad was actually very good.

A little expensive--lunch for two came to almost 80 kuai--but the food here is creative and well-executed. The menu is big so I can't see myself getting tired of this place anytime in the near future. And the south-facing windows on the fourth floor make it a pleasant location for sitting for extended periods of time. Also, they serve corn tea.

    • Chengdu > 25 Hours Fitness Club
      25小时健身俱乐部成都青羊店

I just registered there, it is a nice gym with a large open space full with machines. Very large room for fitness lessons, you won't feel packed inside. You have SPACE.

Clean and neat showers & locker rooms.

A bit expensive maybe compared to other gyms I've seen (1200 RMB/6 months), private teacher 140 RMB/h.

Really enjoyed my Halloween night in Seven Club, good dance music (DJ was a friend), mainstream. It is a Chinese club, small dancefloor packed with girls, and all te men sitting and drinking at the tables surrounding. Very pleasant night & happy crowd having fun!

As a French, I HAD to go to the Café! Was quiet on that early evening of Saturday night, but quickly become full of cheerful people after 10pm. Music ok, nice staff and cold beers, although I was expecting a more "French" decoration...

    • Chengdu > Vera Napoli
      那不勒斯餐吧

At first I had reservations about an Italian restaurant in Chengdu, but they were all dashed away as soon as I arrived at Vera Napoli. Having excellent specials and a nice menu, this restaurant provides quality Italian food in a city practically destitute of cheese and tomato sauce. The tastes were excellent, even the lasagna (which many places often find a way to mess up), not to mention the beautiful presentation. They also have a nice dessert, coffee and tea menu, along with a few good wines. The prices of the dishes are reasonable as well, mostly under around 40 元.

    • Chengdu > Hooters
      美国猫头鹰餐厅

While I have yet to try their food, a few friends and I went there before the new years for drinks. Their long island iced tea was a nice strong medley of liquors, and since it was around the holidays and during the happy hours we all received the two for one drink special, making the ~45元 drink well worth the visit to the American restaurant. Oh, and the waitresses speak a little english too.
