The Pug is awesome, I love you guys! Danny and Dana always come around to ask you how you're doing.
If there is one place in chengdu that does taco's right, it's the lazy pug on taco night. Gotta love the side dishes with extra toppings.
Not to mention all the other food that I've ordered before is delicious as well.
Thank you lazy pug for your existence

What can I say? First bar I went to upon arriving a year ago in chengdu and still one of my favorites.
Where do i start? Danny and Dana, the bosses are ridiculously friendly each and everytime I go in there. They are always smiling and willing to have a chat and see whats new. The servers, Tina and Aida are hilarious and always super nice.
Next, the food. Holy crap attention to detail. Every item that Ive ordered from the menu have been to die for. The pulled pork sandwich is out of this world. The nachoes are a mountain of cheesy goodness. The BBQ chicken pizza is a masterpiece. What else can I say? Just top quality across the board. And 12 kuai tacos on tuesdays? Just awesome.
Drinks. Ima beer guy but always gravitate towards cocktails when im at the pug. They pour them strong, jsut the way I like it. No watered down crap here. Nice specials on lots of drinks everyday too.
All I can say is keep doin what your doin, atmosphere, music (I love muddy waters and was surprised to hear you guys playing him.. and ray lamontagne, very nice) drinks, food. all top notch! Hurry up and get opened again and ill see you guys on the 19th!

We finally got around to trying the lazy pug this week and loved it! A collegue of mine is a regular there and raves about the place. Where the hell in Chengdu (or China) are you asked, "how is your meal???" a few minutes in! Sounds simple...but not in China!
By far and away, Chengdu's best and most authentic american/western restaurant! Nachos were golden perfect and huge with a generous sprinking of jalapenos and homemade sour cream. We're kind of nacho experts (were from texas) and every other place we've tried is just sad-but the pug's nachos would be brilliant at home too! Really great seirvice, great music, real professional quality place. We'll absolutely be coming back often for the nachos and enchiladas.
Highly recommended are the martini's too-my husband had 3 Hendriks' martini's with stuffed blue cheese olives. The coconut martini was awesome too with thai coconut milk. Great place were lucky to have here in chengdu!

The best Chengdu got to offer when it comes to western food. Every dish that i tried have been delicious. I especially like the big nacho plate and the beef fajitas. Price worthy and a hundred times better than that junk you find in Peters or Grandmas Kitchen. The owners and the chinese staff is just great. After 5 years in Chengdu its nice with some real service. Drinks are strong and pretty tasty. Be sure to try the blue cheese burger, it could be the best burger i ever had in China.
This place sure is addictive. Go Pugs!

I just would like to say the owners of the Lazy Pug are the nicest people. I don't know if you can find such great service anywhere in Chengdu. Not only are they attentive, and reasonable, but they actually care about you. And your dog.
I brought my dog last night for the anniversary party, and as soon as Dana saw the dog she came over, loved it, and then asked if she (the dog) was thirsty. She immediately went to the kitchen to bring out a huge bowl of water for the pup, and then stayed around to chat.
It's the small things that count, I think. You know when you go to the Lazy Pug that you'll be taken care of very well, and sometimes that's the kind of guarantee you're looking for.
The music there, fortunately, is not like the typical bar (Paname, Jelly, etc)/club music For the most part it's quite good, and not in your mainstream rap/pop kind of way.
Also I really enjoy the atmosphere of the place. As an American, it honestly feels like I'm back at home sipping on a beer. It's the kind of place where you can temporarily forget that you're in the 'du.

Sweetname...Sorry! We try to inform all our regular customers of our random closings. We do have a website, which we post our hours on....www.thelazypug.com. We are a bit hesitant of keeping the Pug running while we are away. We are back in town and the Pug is open. We know the feeling of trekking across town only to find a closed sign! Anyway, thank you for the positive review and let us know when you come in next time—a strong drink on us!

My husband and I just ate at the Lazy Pug tonight. Totally agree on the previous post...best burger in Chengdu....actually, China. What restaurant has blue cheese??? The service was great. The drinks are strong and very tasty...had a few too many. Mojitos are made with huge, fresh mint leaves, fresh pineapple and malibu made me feel like I was out of Chengdu...Owners are cool and will most definitely be back for fish and chips this weekend!
The only bad thing was my driver had nowhere to park! He had to wait for our drunk asses while parked on the sidewalk in front.

After saying for months we'd try this place out (and two attempts where we found it closed), we made it out for back-to-back meals (Sat. dinner, Sun. brunch).
Despite a few kinks, dinner was good.
Wings were not what we expected but were tasty. Caesar salad was watery (needed to be much drier after washing) and under-dressed.
Pulled pork sandwich was great - tender pork, sauce tangy with a nice kick of heat. Taro chips were a little on the thick side. The burger was hands-down the best burger I've had in Chengdu. It's been 2 days and I'm still dreaming of the thick, beefy goodness. Finally, a place that makes a proper restaurant quality burger patty! Buttered bun, real cheese, grilled onion... it was just amazing. It's going to be hard to try anything else on the menu, because I'm going to want to order this every.... single... time. Fries were good (handcut?), but a tad overfried.
Brunch the next day was equally pleasant.
Eggs benedict were delicious, eggs properly poached and everything well slathered in hollandaise. The hollandaise tasted like it could use a touch more acid, but overall, it was good. The quiche was nice and dense and delicious with a good crust. Both plates had these great potato string hashbrowns, although again, a little overfried.
Coffee was nice and strong and it kept coming.
Overall, my impression of this place has simply been outstanding. Service was friendly and attentive, environment was cozy and comfy, the place looks great and they play good music. Yeah, still room for improvement but I can at least feel like they're trying and committed to quality which is much more than I can say about a number of Western restaurants in Chengdu.
This place is now one of my favorite places in Chengdu. I'll definitely be back.

Let's be real. We're in China. How much does lettuce cost? 48kuai for a Caesar salad? That's ridiculous. Also, our waitress was rarely around. We had to resort to going to the bar for service. I ordered their chicken sandwich which was just bland. Best American restaurant in Chengdu? Well, we're not in America so I guess that's why the 7/11's even pass for cool here.

First time I been to the Lazy Pug.. Got lost too. They should advertise that its on the basement floor.
Anywho, I love the 'Pug.' There are allot of Expats there, so it felt like home (mostly Americans, while other pubs are allot of British peoples). So the pub had the look of a lounge. I would rank them to a good lounge in NYC, the vibe was very similar; not too loud music, very knowledgeable staff and western toilets!!!
I could not comment on the food, because I had pizza. The pizza was 'Mikes Pizza.' Not sure if its common for 'Mike' to tend pizza there, but I thought he cooked out of his apartment.
If he reads this, he might know who I am, I asked him briefly about New Haven pizza, since pizza was originated there.
My review on the pizza, as compared to US pizza would be 6.5-7/10. I am a pizza dude and know my pizza well. It obviously ranks above the crap shit pizza known as pizzahut and dominos. The reason why I rank it 6.5-7 is that I had the best pizza in the world, Modern, so its hard to judge pizza against those standards. Heck, I even had 'NYC' style pizza which Mike keeps mentioning, but NYC is too broad. Not sure if he meant Manhattan or Brooklyn pizza, because there is a HUGE difference between them Brooklyn pizza. But nothing compares to Modern, Sally or Pepe's, and #4 Bar pizza, all of new haven. I would say its a general bar quality pizza (Not a restaurant called 'Bar' thats in Downtown New Haven). Which isnt bad by any means.
Though what I do like about Mikes is that there isnt any heavy 'after taste' like most pizza parlors has. They use fresh ingredients so that their pizza has that higher quality taste. That is something I notice first and foremost. The pie was 12 inches, which is about a 'small' in the states. Price is about 11 US for a personal 12 incher (yea say that without a giggle), so thats similar as well.
Yet on the flip side, since its the only good quality pizza around, I would give it 8.5/10 for China pizza. Hopefully its common for Mike to cook pizza at the 'Pug.'
Now mike as a person; Since I mentioned the New Haven style pizza, he kinda had an attitude. He might have been asked allot in regards to pizza, which I can understand, but hey, when someone misses pizza from home, theres no reason to look down on their customers. Not only that, he was in a band that was playing. I asked him to play some 'Jason Mraz.' He did not take kindly to that... Meh, I guess im not 'white' (im Asian American) to make an impact on him (excuse me because I had a few Jameson in me). Yet since hes the only OK pizza dude around, ill just have to suck it up and go to him, until me and a local New Haven county person here can try to mimic New Haven style pizza!

In my original review I gave the place 5 stars I also said how great the pulled pork is. I even said it was better than Bodeans in London.
After getting food poisoning last week. I have every right to change my review. It does not mean the place is a bad restaurant, but I think its a issue. The Managers of The Pug sent me a kind and well mannered email and I really appreciate that. If we can't be honest on the review section what's the point. Just close the whole section. Also I don't use this to take personal digs at other people.
Every restaurant at one time or another makes mistakes or has problems, but Im sure The Pug with its good management team will have great success in the future.

Went to both Taco Night and Sunday Brunch this past week. Food was great and generous portions were made by staff. Seems though the Pugsters take these crazy posts too seriously, and the staff wants to over-react, like no sour cream for my taco, or some reaction to these silly "MeatHead" reviews, forums, and other websites. Keep in mind that your food is now consistantly good, and that is what customers most care about.
As I read this ClayUK post on both the forum and the review sections along with his other food poisoning posts, it seems that this ClayUK is one who make joke of this. How can you say this about these places, when no other reported sickness was evident, to any other customers, and that was mexican night, so everybody ate the same thing?
You, my friend, should "zip it" from now on, since Confusious said, "If you do not have something good to say, best to say nothing!" Sorry you missed a day of work, but it might have been the toxic red wine at Mooney's...

The Pug's Sunday brunch may be the best thing to happen to Chengdu since Ma La and La Jiao. This place has hands down the best and most authentic American food in Western China. It's the first place I've been to that not only has REAL BACON but cooks it until its CRISPY! no sushi bacon here. BTW there is a bottomless cup of coffee that comes with any brunch, just like a real diner.
Moving on, Pulled Pork, Big juicy Burgers with CANDIED BACON(see the heavens open from above as you eat this), fresh tortilla chips with a generous portion of Salsa (aaahem Peter's tex-mex and your pathetically small salsa/sour-cream containers, a real American should never stand for such a lack of excess, Shame on you Peter, SHAME)
I would go on but I've only been to the Pug 5 or 6 times, I'll write again after I sample the rest of the menu, but ill end on this, i haven't had one bad meal, and there is no other western restaurant in Chengdu where i can make that same claim.
PS
Drink specials, AWESOME. the bar alone is worth the trip.

As a former diabetic and competition eater I am enraged that such a place exists. The food here is so good that I am constantly at odds with my dietician-wife's advice to eat nothing but juices and hot pot. Just the other day I was loitering outside the Pug on a 37 degree day huffing the exhaust vents from the kitchen when one of the staff came outside to me with a cold glass of lemon-infused water and said, "Excusame sir, you look hot. Come inside and have a rest." God damn this place for their delicious food and friendly service.

Great service from friendly staff who are obviously very well trained. Tasteful well done decor (not so sure about the graffiti behind the bar personally, but won't hold it against you). Good selection of affordable well mixed drinks but not totally sure about the food. It's a fairly limited menu which I don't mind at all (even if I'm allergic to most of it as a result!), and what I've tried has been good. It just seems to be very expensive for what it is though.

Just spent a great night out at "The Lazy Pug".
Honestly, there was nothing to complain about and I am known to be a food-bitch. I had really great falafel. But what was more important than the food was the great company and atmosphere.
The wine I had was great, as were the other drinks.
The food on the menu is absoltly reasonable prized. The drinks are even quiet cheap in my opinion.
The atmosphere was great! Dana and Danny were more than welcoming to a stranger showing up this night.I would love to see more welcoming places like The Lazy Pug in China where you feel like beeing at "Cheers" where everybody knows your name!....
Next time I come to Chengdu, I know where I will be!
I wish there would be a bar like your's in Kunming. I know where I would hang out after work!

I went there for dinner and had the crispy chicken sandwich, which was a bit pricey at 58RMB, but delicious and worth it. Fresh cut fries, quality chicken breast, coleslaw. Yum. They had nice free refills of ice tea which almost made me leap for joy like I was back in America. The ambiance is very American and I chatted briefly with the owner who says they are from the Midwest. Also had Sangria for 15RMB a glass which I found very reasonable.
All around good properly run joint with great service. Except for the slightly higher price point on some foods, I think people here are just splitting hairs. They have daily specials that are reasonable. If you're looking for non Chinese food you can't expect Chinese prices.

friendly Chinese stuff but sry man, neither the drink nor the food matches the standard for the price you charge, the so called drinks might be worse than the food. I got dragged there by a Chinese buddy says you have good drinks, think he might had too much whisky with green tea, just disappointing.

Ate there and to be honest I thought it was only OK. The homemade coleslaw had no flavor, the burgers were alright for the high price tag, the sauce/dressing they used was alright, to much vinegar in the chicken wings sauce (I make better at home). Said comes with cheese but in reality the amount was so small you could hardly call it "comes with cheese". All in all I found the menu limited and tasteless for the price, would never eat there again. But, the drinks (which are expensive) are good and well made, the high lite of the whole experience.
Nice ambiance though and well decorated place. Food needs some work.

Instead of everybody buying these plane tickets to go home for the summer, save a couple thou. and eat at the Pug. I was not in China when I ate there(I love China but a break never hurts). I felt that I was back in Canada, a restaurant that makes everything on site, consciousness to favour and creativity. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. The music to the vivid colours of the art on brick. If your business is in F and B why not put your heart in it? These guys covered everything.

Good food and great place to grab a martini and relax.
Really liking the ambiance. Tasteful, simple, modern, and youthful. Best looking foreign owned place in town in my opinion.

The good:
The pulled pork sandwiches are really great. Tender, flavorful and juicy. The homemade red cabbage coleslaw is a particularly nice touch.
The martinis are AWESOME.
Stylish, understated, modern decor: exposed brick, national geographic photo prints and mood lighting.
Attentive waitstaff: we never needed to wait for our water glasses to be filled or for our plates to be cleared. Even the chef himself came out from the kitchen to check on our order.
The music is good.
The fries were super tasty. Hand-cut?
The bad:
Maybe it seems nuts in Chengdu, but the staff were actually too attentive. Within minutes of finishing our meal, we were approached at least four times by at least three different people to order something else. Since there are no desserts on the menu, this meant requests to order more wine or a martini. Is it really too much to ask to enjoy our romantic evening a bit longer before basically being asked, "Would you like fries with that?"
Bits of the brick wall kept crumbling onto our table. It probably just needs to be sanded down. (In China, exposed brick tends to be really exposed!)
Scented candles in a restaurant should be a no-no. We want to smell the great food!
Most of the taro chips, which apparently accompany all the sandwiches, were overcooked. The few that weren't though, were delicious.
It's a bit pricey for Chengdu, especially for an independent establishment. (Not that the franchises deserve it either.) The pulled pork sandwiches were 65 yuan apiece (Really! At least they could have thrown in a side salad); more reasonably priced were the basket of fries for 20, and the martinis which start around 40 and go up to 88 for the 'Laoban tini'. If I remember correctly, there are no entrees under fifty.
From my (local) husband: no hot sauce! Expect requests for this over and over. It's Chengdu. Although, even in North Carolina (home of pulled pork), where there's barbecue, there's hot sauce.
The verdict:
A great idea with some kinks to be worked out. And I really hope they do work them out, because the Lazy Pug fills a niche that's currently wide open in Chengdu.
