I am a black American living in Chengdu and was wondering where I could find someone to do relax (chemically straighten) my hair. I wasn't sure what I do, and then I went to Lain Guy. I provided the product and Mr. Guy and his assistants applied. EXCELLENT! I highly recommend. Not only is the whole team sweet and professional, the result was even better than what I'd hoped for.

I've been getting blonde highlights from Lain for a few months now, and he's truly the best in Chengdu, if you're a foreign client. His salon is modest in appearance, and the location is a bit sequestered, but his expertise with Caucasian hair is far and away the best you'll find in this city. No one else here even comes close to his expertise (and I've tried to patronize some of the high-end salons in expensive locations that claim they cater to foreign clientele. Don't believe them!) Truly, Lain is a great find. Moreover, he's very kind, accommodating, patient, and conscientious about his work. Plus, his English is terrific—and as other posters have mentioned, he's perfectly conversant in French and Mandarin as well!
I recommend him to all my friends, especially the blondes! ;)
My only warning is time: If you're getting your hair colored by him, be sure to plan to spend 3 to 4+ hours in the salon. He's very meticulous with the coloration process, and his assistants tend to take their time with the washing and drying process as well!

My wife has had her hair done her twice. Both of us have been pretty happy with Lain's results and the price is reasonable.
Also, pretty happy with the fact that I can sit comfortably waiting for her to be finished in an environment not crazily decorated, without annoying blasting music, and not staffed entirely by incompetent children who look like rejects from South Park's metro-sexual episode.

I just had my hair done by Lain Guy himself. The cut was good but not at all what I asked for. I showed him a picture and then he did what he wanted.
The color is a DISASTER! For some reason we had a miscommunication. I am not sure how it happened but I asked for highlights— he said highlights— and I ended up with platinum blonde hair which does not compliment my warm skin tone at all. He left the roots brown. (close to an inch from my scalp!) I wanted to crawl into a hole and never come out again. After a few days, I returned to ask for him to fix it. He seemed dismayed. He genuinely thought that was what I wanted. He offered me a 50% discount and I said I had already paid a lot of money for something I did not want. He then complied and "fixed" it for free. I now have low lights in my white very very damaged hair. I guess that is as fixed as it is going to get for now.

I've had my hair cut at Lain Guy four times now. The first time was by M. Guy himself, as I'd won a free haircut from gochengdoo.com. M. Guy is French-Cambodian and can provide services in French, Cambodian, English and Chinese! If memory serves, he told me that after leaving France, he spent several years in Shanghai and Beijing before coming to open his own salon in Chengdu.
Anyway, after the first haircut, every other time my hair has been cut by Yuming as, sadly, I just can't afford the amazing M. Guy! No matter, as I have not had a single bad haircut there.
The place is nice, clean, and I appreciate the understated decor when so many salons in Chengdu are so frou-frou. They actually sit you down and do a proper consultation on your hair before washing! Also, I like it that I can have a friendly chat while I'm getting my hair cut if I like, but it's no big deal if I'm quiet. Everybody who works there is friendly and they do anything and everything they can to make their customers happy. I've seen them deal with some very picky clients with absolute patience and professionalism.
It's a bit pricey, but I was already going to a pricey salon near Chunxilu, paying over a hundred for a haircut. I hear from friends that prices for color are definitely up there compared to other salons, but they've mostly been happy with the results.
As an interesting aside, M. Guy said that he has experience cutting natural and treated black hair and is also happy to offer straightening and perming services if the customer brings the supplies (which can be brought from abroad or purchased on taobao).
The only small criticism I have is that the hair washing service is just not as good as the typical Chinese hairwash (hence 4 stars). Why not have the best of both worlds and offer a nice long hairwash-massage? It would be so nice to have both a great hairwash and a precise made-to-order cut.
In any case, I simply will not go anywhere else to cut my hair. Not only is it the best place in Chengdu, it's probably the best place I've ever been anywhere, especially for the money. I wish I could get my hair cut by a Parisian stylist back home, but it'd surely cost hundreds!

If you care about how your hair looks, this guy is no doubt THE expert. He doesn't try to do anything crazy with your hair. He doesn't try to persuade u to spend lots of money on perms or coloring. He is expensive though, but he takes his time taking care of your hair. I couldn't help touching my hair for a whole day after it was done at Lain Guy's. I will try to go there again sometime soon even though I seriously hate haircuts

This guy deserves a write up. I have used him twice and my hair is nauturally thick and slightly curly. He cuts like a magician on top if it the first time I went all out and did some highlights and they came out exactly the way it should. This man is worth every cent, I hope business rocks for this guy as he rocks!!

I won a free haircut at Lain Guy Hair Salon participating the best/worst haircut experience giveaway contest. After enjoying a most pleasant haircut at the salon, I'll have to say next time if there's a contest like this, my topic would be Best Haircut at Lain Guy Hair Salon! My hair is black, slightly wavy and relatively soft. With Mr. Guy's magical hands, it looked never better! I'd strongly encourage interested Chinese customers to try out this fabulous salon too!

Wow! Very impressed - my 3 year old daughter won a cut in the Gochengdoo comp and they totally set her at ease - worked quickly but professionally:) so I thought I'd give them a shot with my curly hair - walked away happy and feeling pampered! Would recommend them in a heartbeat!
