1 Casual dating is not as much of a thing here as in the West, though it does exist. Probably most women here are looking to get married (if you're not married by 30 you may be looked down on even if successful).

2. It's not hard to meet people, or women, here: people are open and friendly. Develop even a little bit of a social life and you will get introduced (Chinese people will assume you're lonely here and try hard to help out). I think you need to think what you want. If you're, potentially, OK with marriage, then I agree with pandadokungfu (tho I think the place is called 'One Way Recreation: on a SW corner of Renmin Zhong Lu a little north of Tianfu Square). Other than that, your options are a little more limited if you want to be ethical.

If only semi-serious, you could try bright young things in the dance bars in e.g. the Jiuyuanqiao area (probably more fun if you go in a group).

If you just want to fool around (which I think is perfectly OK), then don't break hearts by pretending you're serious. There are plenty of very nice 'working girls' here with whom you could have some very good times. The reason I started this thread is because I literally and honestly don't know how to navigate my way to any sort of relationship with a Chinese woman given cultural/linguistic barriers, and am generally concerned that 'Chinese girls don't date laowai' etc (you hear mixed things, so I guess I won't know until I get there.)

You hear things like 'white guys get treated like Gods' etc (I assume even if there is some truth to this it gets exaggerated) but then you also hear it can be lonely living in China as a laowai. That's why I'm trying to do research etc, cause like most people looking to travel, I don't want to be lonely.

But no, I'm not looking for marriage right off the bat, but that doesn't obviously mean I'm looking to plough through women. I mean what is it like back in the west? You date women until it either works out or doesn't work out. So I assume I'll be applying that methodology to China.

Chinese women actually have a rather positive view of laowai - we have money, knowledge, and large 'equipment' that we know how to use, in their stereotype - so there's no need to be shy. llyfish is also pretty good for finding girls who are open to westerners, though I find a lot of them to be too loose for my liking. Again, no shortage of gold diggers. You could also try The Leg and Whistle for a less clubby and more pubby kind of scene. The owner is a really nice woman who speaks excellent English and a lot of the people who go there are pretty cool. I believe the main bars for this are: Panam, Jellyfish and Shamrock. They all seem to speak English in these places, some can speak a few lines of German too.

The expensive bars in JiuYanQiao also have some of these girls, but they're more "open" to anything - especially money. Some are "working". And you will need Mandarin here.

For casual incidents, Jellyfish is probably the easiest, however for a reason. A few of them sleep around with the regulars (within minutes of meeting you). Unfortunately, one time I caught something (herpes, even using a condom) and it's here to stay (no treatment). So, the casual side may be fun, but there are drawbacks.

So, there are all kinds of girls in China. There probably are some who will not date foreigners, but I usually meet the ones who exclusively chase foreigners. They all have various long and detailed reasons, some are simply crazy, some intelligent and thoughtful.

If you speak Mandarin, the variety grows. And Mandarin is fine for younger generations.

parents from poor and rural backgrounds often highly object against those relationships though and will threaten to disown their daughter and never speak to her again, just like in the west if the guy is black, indian etc.

relatively poor white collar girls that are attracted to foreigners and somehow managed to learn proper english will see you as their only way up the social ladder.It's uncommon for a girl that makes 2000-4000RMB and has no influential parents to marry a rich guy. If she's really pretty she might make it as a second wife.

spoilt girls with rich parents might see you as an adventure or accessory comparable to a gucci bag, but mostly they're not too interested in foreigners as rich chinese guys are a lot richer than your average english teacher out here.

the most common type of girl you'll meet has just finished uni, speaks decent english, has watched lots of western movies and knows that china is kinda boring. She think's you're an interesting guy from an interesting country.

be prepared to catch an STD, nobody in china ever checks for them unless their dick is falling off.

As for most foreign guys, being one myself, its hard to relate with most of them on this level. Most foreigners i meet ALWAYS talks about sex or 'bitches' as they call them. I have respect for the opposite sex and will not call them that, unless they are total cunts, then ill tell them off.
So most of my foreign guy friends i meet will talk numbers and their one night stands. Totally hate this realm of convo. I guess their day life as an English teacher and nightlife of banging their students does bring them mental justice.

As for 'us single males that are nice,' finding a good situated woman is even harder. A good professional woman is a tough find, even harder in China's society today (vs the States). Then if you do find one, the courtship, dating, XYZ yada yada yada. Which is a game in itself.

But yea, the clubs and bars around here is just that, for 'hooking up.' And looking for a long term commitment in this area is asking for trouble. Like in the states, its rare to meet a future life partner at these venues.
