    • Hi guys, does anyone know where to buy an e-book reader in Chengdu? I´ve been to the famous big computer markets near Shengtiyiguan not far from Sichuan uni, but found only one stall selling them. I´m speaking about b&w 16 clrs e-ink readers, not tablets.
Also any advice on chinese brands would be appreciated!

      Thank You very much :)

    • There are a few Kindle sellers on Taobao based in Chengdu. I bought a Kindle 4 for about 500 rmb from a guy on the 5th floor of Buy Now (5A33) a few weeks ago, but there was also another similar priced option in the building across the street. Chinese ones are probably a little cheaper, but last time I looked (some time ago admittedly) they had lower quality screens and shorter battery life.

      More options here: http://s.taobao.com/[...]

    • Dragon Expeditions, thank You for Your reply! Just a few questions:

I guess Buy Now is the big market at Sichuan Gymnasium station? (tried to google it, but didn´t find anything)

How is it possible, that chinese Kindles are cheaper? And how do I know they are really Kindle? (I´m afraid of buying a fake one, I´m not very good at computers ;) )

      Thank You very much again!

    • Buy Now (百脑 Bainao in Chinese) is one of the older computer markets a block further East, on Xinnan Lu. http://goo.gl/maps/aJmf

Where I wrote "Chinese one's" above I'd meant Chinese domestically produced e-readers that don't claim to be Kindles, but I can see that could have been read as "Chinese sourced Kindles"

If I had to guess I'd say that Amazon Kindles are cheaper here because they probably came out the back door of the factory. No evidence for that, just a guess. They appear to be the real deal (at least the ones I've bought have been), and allow registration with Amazon, buying books, etc. The obvious scam would be to sell a refurbished one as new (possibly with an inferior quality screen) but they come in original Amazon packaging etc and certainly look and act brand new to me.
