I know that much but HOW and WHERE can you Unlock a US iphone in Chengdu? I went to an "apple" store and they said they can't and I am nervous for it to get messed up.

      Its just a 3gs.

      Anyone knows please speak! thanks

    • Pick one

      1. Go to the cell phone street Tai Sheng Lu 太升路 in the city center. Go into any of the smaller stores next to the street. Tell them you want to unlock your phone (tell them you want to yue yu 越狱 if you're not sure what to ask), and if they say its not possible, insist that it is. If they still refuse, go to another one and ask. They will then take it to another place where it will be unlocked. Warning, in order to unlock it here they will change it to the Chinese version of the software (still English text) making the phone temporarily usable only with Chinese networks. Also, because the Chinese software is one or two versions behind the U.S., upgrading to a newer version (through iTunes or something) will make it again unusable in China, and you'll have to reunlock it. Cost is around 150rmb. Did this with an iPhone 3G.

      2. Go to http://www.cell-unlockers.com/ and buy an unlock code for around $8-10, wait a couple of hours and input the code in your phone whenever it prompts you to. The website looks sketchy, but the code worked for me with a Droid 2 Global phone.

      3. If you have a Chinese friend or can speak decent Chinese check an online Chinese vendor that especially deals with unlocking phones (there are many). Give them a call, or message them on qq if you can read/type Chinese, tell them what phone you have and they will guide you through the process of unlocking it. Cost is much cheaper then the other 2 options. However, this might only work if your phone already is downgraded to the current Chinese version.

      Good luck.

    • You could always phone your US provider and ask them to unlock the phone for you. If your still in your contract- they'll usually still for you as long as your up to date on your bills and a few months into your contract. If they ask why you want to do it- just tell them you are going abroad for a 1 month and want to use a local sim card.

    • There is a store by the South gate of SCU called 3S Phone. Call 136 883 69912 or 135 500 58007. Their entire business is devoted to android and iphones.

    • Second floor of the computer city at the corner of the 1st Ring Road and the Ren Min Nan Lu.

Lots of guys in there can do it. Just flash you iPhone and say "unlock". They all know what you mean. 100-200RMB and they will add on whatever apps you want.

This is not a difficult thing at all and you don't need to worry about if its going to work. If it doesn't, you know where to find them.

They'll do it right in front of you.

    • Reading the email thread. There's a difference between just unlocking your iPhone and getting it to work on the Chinese mobile providers. I unlocked my phone, and inserted a China Mobile sim card, but it still doesn't work. What I think I need is someone to put the Chinese version of the iPhone OS on to my phone.

Am I right, or am I doing this wrong? Thinking I'll go to the guys in computer city and see if they can help me sort this out.....

    • Just go to the computer city I mentioned above. It's real simple. You don't pay or leave the store til your sim card works in the phone. They will fix whatever you need fixed. 100-200RMB. Plus they'll let you sit there on their Mac laptop connected to your phone uploading whatever apps you want for free.
