The last two weeks, THURSDAYS have seen a new phenom in Chengdu, free margaritas for the ladies til 9pm, and great soft tacos and a mexican food menu from this pretty cool place on 1st ring Road, near north gate of Sichuan U.
I found that you have to grub on the tacos pretty fast so they do not get too soft, but the guacamole is great (best ever had) and the chips & salsa continue to be out of this world. I think this place is really getting better since it opened last Spring, and the people who work there are very friendly and go out of their way with the service and the hospitality.
The rest of the time they have BBQ, and RIBS, along with burgers, fries, salads, chicken sandwich and other menu items, which are all pretty spectacular. I am just sayin, we should all go and check it out since these people put themselves out so much.
Would recommend the Mojitos, as well as the Lychee Martini at the Happy Hour.

The tacos are very bland and passable, at least for my Mexican standards....though they have 12rmb Tequila shots, which make the trip worth it in my opinion

do not be hatin' !
I am a regular person, not affiliated with the business.
I just wanted to try to spread the word because these people put themselves out to the customers so much, and the food is pretty great.
I do have a cause; I want them to succeed so I can keep gettin that pulled pork sandwich, and the chips / salsa, and free margaritas.
so try not to always assume a good review is some advertising. The advertisiments are on another section of this web page !

great night last night at the pug!
the margaritas were very nice, the (homemade!) tortilla chips were addictive, and the tacos were fresh. good atmosphere, good crowd, very worth it.
just two small things: season the meat in the tacos! as far as i could tell, it was merely seasoned with a bit of salt. bit of a surprise to bite through all that nice flavorful veg, sour cream and hot sauce to get to the bland meat.
and please mark the prices of everything on the order sheets! (you have to write in your own orders on a checklist for the waitstaff as it's so busy.) i was positively SHOCKED to be charged SIXTEEN YUAN APIECE for two tiny little ramekins of sour cream! must've been at most an ounce each. i understand that sour cream is hard to come by around here, but come on. at least i would have like to have known what i was signing up for. btw, the tacos themselves are 12 yuan apiece! something wrong with this picture...

Hello,
We just want to clear up a few things as owner and operator of the Lazy Pug. First of all, we are sorry the prices were not listed on the order sheet...that will change. We put the menus all over and expected people to use those as a guideline. Sorry. 16 yuan for sour cream is justified. Please go to Carefour and see the price of a very small container...between 28 and 36 yuan for the 3 or 4 containers they do have! And, if your portion was small I apologize as a true sour cream lover! My husband and I are in the US for a few weeks. We always watch and control the portions closely and are very fair. We only want to break even on certain hard to find and not commonly used products in China. If you come back to the Pug after the beginning of November, do let us know and we will happily give you a proper portion of sour cream to make up.
Also, Steve our chef as seasoned the hell out of the meat! The meat is cooked and loved for hours. We will add more seasoning though. Also, the ground beef is high quality Korean beef and the chicken is alway fresh not frozen. So, 12 yuan a piece is fair and if we sold much lower it would be very hard to run a restaurant and give free well poured (not using cheap, nasty tequila!) drinks for two hours. If we sold tacos on from a street stall and had low rent and no electricity to pay the price would be cheaper!
Please be patient with the Pug. We are two very hard-working owners trying to provide a honest, well-run establishment which is VERY challenging. We can promise high quality ingredients served in a restaurant that was put up with love and inspiration.
We also do appreciate ALL the negative and positive feedback and will always work to improve things. We did get rid of the scented candles! Iraglassismyhero your comments and feedback is always appreciated in specific. Come introduce yourself sometime. Danny and I (Dana) are usually always running the show...a crappy, disorganized one at times! Not easy.
Thank you to many for helping making the Pug successful and REMEMBER if you have complaints PLEASE come talk to us! Most of the time we will fix it on the spot.
The Pugs
Another note...we have NEVER posted fake reviews. Sometimes good customers of ours think they are helping us and write glowing reviews. This is NOT on our request or desire as it is annoying most to us!

@the Pugs (Dana):
I did notice that there were no more scented candles actually, that's good and thanks!
As for the sour cream, there was enough in a serving, I just feel that the price was too much for the small amount served, and I definitely wouldn't have ordered one per taco if I'd known they cost more than the tacos themselves. I wasn't looking for menus on the walls, and didn't actually notice one with prices until I went to the toilet. As for the price of the tacos, it is definitely fair, I'm not disputing that.
The beef in the tacos was very good, it just didn't taste like taco beef with taco seasonings.
I'm sorry if you think I've been impatient with The Lazy Pug, but my purpose in posting at all is to help keep a good thing going. You can look at my other posts; I don't review restaurants often, either because I know they're unlikely to work on improving themselves, or because they aren't what I'm looking for anyway. The Lazy Pug definitely fills a niche previously unfilled in Chengdu and I'd like to see it stick around. In the uber-competitive Chengdu market, the first year seems to be a critical time for a most small businesses. I don't think that The Lazy Pug is crappy or disorganised, I just think that it has some rough edges to work on, but of course, this is to be expected in a new restaurant.
As I said before, I had a great time at the Pug last week, so I'll likely go again. I've heard good things about the brunch, so you may even see me this weekend! I have actually introduced myself before, but I can do so again next time. ;)

im only in chengdu until next monday, unfortunately. Ive really enjoyed my stay here but there seems to be some good reviews on the street for the lazy pug. I am hoping to pop in there myself and try some of the options on the menu but if not this time, then it gives me another reason to come back . Good to see the website is encouraging honest and open reviews of local business and even better than there is a owner/operator that takes it on board and wants to improve their services. As someone with hospitality experience both bar and restaurant I wish previous employers had the initiative to be more attentive to such things.

I had to change this post. Myself and my girlfriend went this Thursday night for the taco night. Friday morning around 5am I had severe stomach cramps and later on my girlfriend. We had to be taken to hospital due to severe food posioning. We did not eat breakfast together and we did not eat lunch together, but we did eat at Tacos at the lazy pug. We both lost a days work and today I still feel like crap. I will never be going again.

We are still pugging along! Jorge I hope you found us last Thursday. We just saw your posting. We are still doing our "Mexican" (or as close to Mexican food we can get in Chengdu!) night every Thursday. Tends to get really busy from 7 pm to 9:30 pm or so. We do take reservations through our website...www.thelazypug.com.
As Dragon Expeditions mentioned we are closing for renovation from Thursday, July 5th until Tuesday, August 14th. We will re-open on Wednesday, August 15!
We are having a big 4th of July celebration complete with homemade apple pie and watermelon drink specials. It will be on that Wednesday (the actual 4th) and be from noon til midnight.
We will also be opening the Crazy Pug in the Zijing Area (near Carefour) in the south of the city in late August.
Thank you once again to everyone who has made the Pug fun!
Enjoy the summer!
