A young man's suicide was caught on video as he jumped from the fourth story of a public building in Pu'an Town, Jiange County, Guangyuan, Sichuan.

According to the notes accompanying the home video, the man, a soldier, was despondent over a romantic situation and prepared to take his life on the afternoon of December 17 at the Golden Dragon Hotel near Xuehua Square.

The nearby Jiange Middle School was closed for school holidays, but pedestrian traffic in the area at the time was heavy. Bypassers spotted the man threatening to jump and set up crude padding below by placing mattresses on the sidewalk.

Emergency personnel was notified, but witnesses said that they arrived too late and without suitable emergency equipment. By the time they were on the scene, the man had already jumped and apparently died on the scene.
